In the heart of Tabuelan, Cebu stands San Juan Bautista Parish, a church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the town's patron saint. The parish is officially listed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cebu.
For anyone passing through Tabuelan, it may simply look like another town church.
But there's a little more to its story.
A Church With Roots in Tabuelan
San Juan Bautista Parish has been part of the Tabuelan community for decades.
Historical accounts indicate that the church community was originally a visita of Tuburan Parish before Tabuelan became an independent parish in 1940. The present church building was constructed in the 1960s.
That gives the church a connection to a much older chapter in the development of the town.
Long before Tabuelan became the destination people now associate with beaches, resorts, springs, and road trips, there was already a community gathering around this parish.
And that's what makes places like this worth noticing.
